For most of our clients, you do not need to ask permission to upgrade a Klaviyo account, as you will naturally run out of credits as the mailing list size increases.
From the Klaviyo homepage, locate the bottom left-hand corner.
Click on the account name to open the menu.
Select Billing from the menu options.
2. Change Your Plan
Within the Billing section, click on “Change Plan.”
To upgrade, use the drop-down menu to select the next available plan tier.
3. Adjust Additional Services (Optional)
By default, the following services will be set to zero:
SMS Plan
Reviews Plan
Marketing Analytics
Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform
If needed, adjust any of these services by entering the appropriate values.
4. Finalize the Upgrade
Click “Continue to Payment.”
Review the changes, then click “Confirm.”
Allow the upgrade to process and load—this may take a few moments.
Here’s a detailed explanation of how Klaviyo billing works:
Overview of Klaviyo Billing
Klaviyo uses a subscription-based billing model based on your email list size, SMS usage, and any add-on features you select. Billing can be monthly or annually, depending on your preferences.
1. Billing Components
A. Email Plans
Pricing is tiered based on the number of active email contacts (i.e., people you send to, not necessarily the full list).
You can send unlimited emails within your tier.
If your active list grows beyond your current tier, you’ll be prompted to upgrade to the next tier.
B. SMS Plans
SMS is billed separately from email and is usage-based.
You can choose a prepaid SMS credit package or enable pay-as-you-go billing.
Charges depend on:
Message volume
Country of recipient
Whether you’re sending SMS or MMS (MMS is more expensive)
Regulatory and carrier fees
C. Add-On Services
You can add premium features à la carte:
Reviews
Marketing Analytics
Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform
These services are generally optional and billed based on volume or flat monthly rates.
2. Billing Settings and Management
You can manage your billing via:
Settings → Billing
View your current plan, add-ons, and payment history
Upgrade/downgrade plans at any time
Add/remove features like SMS or Reviews
Change billing frequency (monthly vs annual)
3. Payment and Invoicing
Klaviyo accepts major credit/debit cards.
Charges occur automatically each billing cycle (monthly/annually).
Invoices are available for download in the Billing section.
4. Overage Charges and Plan Adjustments
If you exceed your email or SMS limits, Klaviyo will:
Prompt you to upgrade
Or automatically adjust your plan to the next tier, depending on your settings
SMS usage beyond prepaid credits will trigger overage billing
5. Trial and Free Plans
Klaviyo offers a free plan for accounts with up to:
250 contacts
500 email sends per month
Some limited SMS capabilities (U.S. only)
Once you exceed these limits, you must upgrade to a paid plan.
